Image Registration in the T2* Measurements of the Calcaneus Used to Predict Osteoporotic Fractures

چکیده

The conventional criterion for fracture risk assessment is the bone mineral density (BMD) measured by X-ray absorptiometry. Even if there is a strong association between bone strength and BMD, nowadays it is well accepted that this is not a sufficiently reliable predictor of fracture risk in osteoporotic patients. Therefore, there is a growing need for a better predictor of bone strength. Several studies have confirmed that the T2* relaxation time estimates based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) show a strong correlation with bone strength. In this paper, an image-processing tool for the reduction of motion artifacts in the T2* measurements of the bone marrow of the calcaneus is described.

Discriminatory ability of magnetic resonance T2* measurements in a sample of postmenopausal women with low-energy fractures: a comparison with phalangeal speed of sound and dual x-ray absorptiometry.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES We sought to assess the ability of magnetic resonance T2* measurements to discriminate between patients with and without osteoporotic fracture and compare the results with the discriminatory ability of speed of sound (SOS) measured at the phalanx and axial bone mineral density (BMD). MATERIALS AND METHODS T2* measurements of lumbar spine were obtained at 1.5 T in 26 p...

Osteoporosis--comparative study between quantitative ultrasound of calcaneus and DXA.

INTRODUCTION Osteoporosis is bone disease characterized by reduced bone mass and reduction of bone tissue. Main complications of osteoporosis and major cause of morbidity and mortality in elderly population are fractures. Early diagnosis and detection of osteoporosis can prevent complications of osteoporosis in terms of fractures. OBJECTIVES Diagnostic assessment of osteoporosis is mostly bei...

Percutaneous Vertebroplasty in Iranian Patients with Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures

Background: Osteoporotic compression vertebral fractures are common clinical problems. In those with refractory fractures, percutaneous cement augmentation has been suggested. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional outcome of percutaneous vertebroplasty in Iranian patients with refractory osteoporotic fractures. Methods: We retrospectively studied 37 osteoporotic fractures in 28 p...
